ActiveGate purposes and functionality

  • Latest Dynatrace
  • 4-min read

An ActiveGate can be used for three different use cases, which we refer to as purposes:

  • Route OneAgent traffic to Dynatrace, monitor cloud environments, or monitor remote technologies using extensions
  • Run Synthetic monitors from a private location
  • Install the zRemote module for z/OS monitoring

Each purpose comes with a different subset of functional modules. Modules should not be mixed between purposes—such re-configuration is not supported.

Functionality available for the routing-monitoring ActiveGates

Functionality marked with Dynatrace Classic is superseded in Latest Dynatrace. Use the solution listed in Functionality superseded in Latest Dynatrace instead of the corresponding ActiveGate module.

Log ingest API endpoint is supported on containerized ActiveGate in a number of supported Kubernetes flavours when provisioned with Dynatrace Operator. Since ActiveGate uses file buffers, persistent storage is recommended to prevent data loss during restarts or rescheduling

2

We recommend Dynatrace OTel Collector as an alternative, as it has a Syslog receiver provided by default.

Functionality superseded in Latest Dynatrace

In Latest Dynatrace, several use cases previously covered by ActiveGate modules are now addressed by newer solutions such as cloud platform integrations, extensions, and dedicated apps. These solutions reflect ongoing innovation and offer broader coverage with less setup. Use the solution listed below instead of the corresponding ActiveGate module. For ActiveGates connected to Dynatrace tenants in Group 3 (Enhanced), the superseded modules are blocked from loading and will not execute. ActiveGate itself and all other modules continue to start and run as usual.
