If you're running Dynatrace Classic auto-tagging and management zones, use these guides to move to primary Grail fields and tags.

Decide what to upgrade

Before you pick a guide below, decide what you need, not where it comes from. The same decision applies whether your tags originate from OneAgent, Kubernetes, or a cloud provider.

  • List your existing classic auto-tagging rules and management zones.
  • Derive the tags that directly drive permissions, segment filtering, bucket assignment, or alert routing, for example team, appid, environment, business_unit, or cmdbid. These are meaningful on every signal.
  • Leave entity-only metadata behind, such as last_restarted, deployment-tool, helm-version, or last-audited-by. These describe an entity, not a signal, and don't belong as primary tags.
  • Check whether the tag values you need already exist in your infrastructure. Cloud tags, Kubernetes labels, and OneAgent host tags often already carry the context you're looking for.
  • Prefer configuring tags at the source when possible. Otherwise, use central enrichment rules and scope them at the host group, Kubernetes cluster, or cloud account level to keep them organized.

Then pick the guide below for where your telemetry originates to see the exact configuration steps.

OneAgent

Upgrade from OneAgent classic auto-tagging to primary Grail tags and fields.

Kubernetes

Upgrade Kubernetes telemetry enrichment rules to the central primary Grail tag configuration.

Cloud

Upgrade from classic AWS, Azure, and GCP tag propagation to primary Grail tags.

OpenTelemetry

Upgrade classic OpenTelemetry resource-attribute tagging to primary Grail tags.
