Custom extensions that create entities and define unified analysis pages need to be updated to keep working on the Latest Dynatrace. If you use official extensions, see Extension minimum versions for Latest Dynatrace to check compatibility.

Why upgrade?

Latest Dynatrace uses a different model for entity topology and analysis pages than Dynatrace Classic. If you don't update your custom extensions before upgrading, the following stops working:

  • Entity topology: Latest Dynatrace doesn't create entities and relationships defined in the topology: section. Your extension's monitored targets won't appear as Smartscape nodes, and Latest Dynatrace maps no relationships.
  • Unified analysis pages: Latest Dynatrace doesn't render Classic UA pages defined in the screens: section. No analysis views are available for your extension's entities.

What will you do?

  1. Convert topology to OpenPipeline.
  2. Convert unified analysis screens to platform documents.

Before you begin

  • You have the Dynatrace Extensions VS Code add-on installed.
  • Your VS Code workspace is connected to a Latest Dynatrace environment. If your connection still uses a Classic URL or access token, follow Update your tenant configuration first.

How to upgrade

Step 1: Convert topology

In Latest Dynatrace, OpenPipeline represents entities and relationships as Smartscape nodes and edges. The conversion reads your classic topology and produces OpenPipeline processor files that extract Smartscape nodes from your metrics and logs. Complete this step before converting screens—the screen conversion depends on these files to match each classic entity type to its Smartscape node.

For details, see Convert topology.

Step 2: Convert unified analysis screens

Latest Dynatrace renders unified analysis pages from standalone JSON documents targeting Smartscape nodes, not from the screens: YAML section. The conversion rebuilds each classic page as one or more platform documents that unlock DQL-powered tables and richer entity analysis.

For details, see Convert unified analysis pages.
