OneAgent has a built-in, configurable auto-update mechanism.

OneAgent automatic updates are easy

With auto-update enabled, you don't have to worry about manually updating the OneAgents running in your environment. Each time a new version is released, OneAgent automatically downloads all necessary binaries and libraries and installs them for you. No manual configuration is required.

Following OneAgent automatic updates, you do need to restart all server processes. This is because some components of OneAgent keep running in processes that are monitored by Dynatrace (for example, Java, .NET, Apache, and IIS).

  • Before restart, these processes will continue to be monitored with the previous version of OneAgent.
  • After restart, these processes will be monitored with the latest version of OneAgent.
OneAgent automatic updates are flexible

By default, global automatic OneAgent updates are turned on, but this is configurable at the global, host group, and host level. At each level, you can choose one of the following OneAgent update strategies:

  • Update automatically, regardless of update windows.
  • Update automatically during a selected update window.
  • Do not automatically update. With this option, we don't notify you when instances of OneAgent are outdated.

Additionally:

  • At the host group level, you can choose to inherit the global OneAgent update settings.
  • At the host level, you can choose to inherit the host group OneAgent update settings.

Host settings override host group settings, and host group settings override global settings.

OneAgent automatic updates are secure
  • OneAgent communication is encrypted.
  • OneAgent installers are signed and the signature is verified for each downloaded installer package. If the verification fails, the auto-update attempt is aborted.
OneAgent updates are also manageable through the Dynatrace API

In addition to the Dynatrace web UI procedures described here, you can use the OneAgent configuration API to manage OneAgent updates.

  • Host level
  • Host group level
  • Environment level

OneAgent won't automatically be updated when first installed. By default, Dynatrace waits 45 minutes before updating hosts (both EC2 and non-EC2).

Monitor OneAgent updates

To check environment-level auto-update settings, go to Settings Settings > Fleet management > OneAgent version and updates.

The real user monitoring JavaScript library auto-update setting is separate; go to Settings Settings > Collect and capture > Real User Monitoring > Enablement and cost control.

Configure OneAgent updates

Go to Settings Settings > Fleet management > OneAgent version and updates. The page has two tabs: Configure updates and Manage update windows.

Version management

On the Configure updates tab, the Version management section controls which version OneAgents update to.

Use the Target version dropdown to set the version that serves as the default for new deployments and as the update target for existing OneAgents. Choose a rolling version policy (Latest version, Previous version, or Older version) or pin a specific version.

Update management

The Update management section controls when updates are applied. Use the Update mode dropdown to select one of the following options:

  • Auto-update as soon as Dynatrace releases—OneAgents update automatically as soon as a new version is released, without waiting for a scheduled window.
  • Auto-update during update windows—OneAgents update automatically, but only during the update windows you configure on the Manage update windows tab.
  • Auto-update disabled—not recommended, as it may put your OneAgents at risk of falling out of the supported version range.

For host-group- or host-level overrides, open Configure updates from the entity's details in Fleet Management Fleet Management.

Configure update windows

Update windows currently do not apply in Kubernetes environments.

Update windows are used to schedule automatic OneAgent updates when the Update mode is set to Auto-update during update windows under Update management.

To view and manage update windows, go to Settings Settings > Fleet management > OneAgent version and updates and select the Manage update windows tab. The list shows each window's name, recurrence, start time, timezone, duration, and validity period.

Create an update window

  1. Go to Settings Settings > Fleet management > OneAgent version and updates > Manage update windows.
  2. Select Update window.
  3. Enter a Name of the window. The Enabled checkbox is turned on by default; turn it off to create the window without activating it yet.
  4. Select a Recurrence and set its cadence:
    • Once: Set Start and End to the date and time range during which OneAgent updates.
    • Daily: Set Every (days) to the number of days between updates (1 = every day, 2 = every two days, and so on).
    • Weekly: Select a Day of the week, and set Every X weeks to the number of weeks between updates.
    • Monthly: Set Day of month to the day of the month the update runs, and Every X months to the number of months between updates.
  5. For Daily, Weekly, and Monthly recurrence, also set:
    • Start time and Duration under Update time.
    • Start date and End date under Valid during, to limit when the window is active.
  6. Select a Timezone.
  7. Select Save.

Enable or disable an update window

On the Manage update windows tab, use the status toggle in the Status column to enable or disable individual update windows.

Edit or delete an update window

On the Manage update windows tab, open the menu next to the update window and select Edit or Delete.

Disable automatic updates

We don't recommend that you disable OneAgent automatic updates. If you have very strict software rollout rules, however, you can disable auto-updates permanently with the OneAgent command-line interface.

For troubleshooting, you can temporarily disable automatic updates in Dynatrace at Settings Settings > Fleet management > OneAgent version and updates.
