Upgrade classic custom alerts to Latest Dynatrace equivalents. Use the built-in conversion tooling for metric-selector-based alerts, then manually recreate entity-selector-based alerts using DQL. Run both classic and latest alerts in parallel during validation before decommissioning.

This stage and Upgrade classic dashboards share the same prerequisite—Upgrade configurations and settings—and can run in parallel once that stage is complete.

Why upgrade?

Grail-backed metric alerting eliminates the constraints of precomputed metric selectors and static entity scopes, enabling advanced filtering and aggregations that adapt to your environment without metric explosion.

  • Grail-backed metric alerting: advanced filtering and aggregations without metric explosion, not limited to precomputed metrics and static entity selectors

What will you do?

Start by assessing the ratio of metric-selector to entity-selector alerts; this ratio determines your actual effort for this stage.

  1. Convert metric-selector-based alerts using the built-in conversion tooling
  2. Manually recreate entity-selector-based alerts using DQL
  3. Validate alert behavior by running classic and latest alerts in parallel
  4. Decommission classic metric alerts and upgrade maintenance windows

Upgrade your metric alerting and maintenance windows

1. Convert metric-selector-based alerts

Use the built-in conversion tooling to migrate metric-selector-based alerts to Latest Dynatrace metric events.

  1. Open the classic custom alerting settings and identify all metric-selector-based alerts.
  2. Run the built-in conversion tool on each eligible alert.
  3. Review the conversion output: confirm that thresholds, evaluation windows, and alert sensitivity settings carried over correctly.
  4. Save each converted alert as a new Latest Dynatrace metric event without disabling the classic version yet.

Verify: All metric-selector-based alerts processed through the converter; converted metric events match classic alert definitions.

2. Recreate entity-selector-based alerts with DQL

Rebuild alerts that rely on entity selectors using DQL-based metric queries in Latest Dynatrace; these cannot be auto-converted.

  1. Identify all classic alerts that use entity selectors instead of metric selectors.
  2. For each alert, write a DQL-based metric query that targets the equivalent entity scope.
  3. Create a new Latest Dynatrace metric event using the DQL query, preserving threshold and evaluation window settings.
  4. Verify that the new alert would have fired correctly on historical data by reviewing the metric trend against the threshold.

Verify: All entity-selector-based alerts have manual DQL equivalents; metric queries confirmed against historical alert data.

Assess entity-selector alert proportion early: the built-in converter only handles metric-selector-based alerts. The proportion of entity-selector alerts determines the true effort for this stage. Assess this ratio during the inventory step before estimating timelines.

3. Validate alert behavior in parallel

Run new and classic alerts side by side to confirm thresholds, evaluation windows, and notification targets match expected behavior before any decommissioning.

  1. Enable all converted and recreated Latest Dynatrace alerts without disabling classic versions.
  2. Monitor both alert sets for at least one full evaluation cycle.
  3. Compare alert firing times, thresholds, and notification delivery between classic and latest.
  4. Address any discrepancies; adjust DQL queries, thresholds, or notification routing as needed.

Verify: Latest Dynatrace alerts fire in alignment with classic alerts over the parallel validation period; no silent gaps in detection.

Run both alert sets in parallel before decommissioning: decommissioning classic alerts before Latest Dynatrace equivalents are fully validated risks detection gaps. Always run both in parallel for a full evaluation cycle before disabling classic alerts.

4. Decommission classic alerts and upgrade maintenance windows

Disable classic metric alerts once Latest Dynatrace equivalents are validated, then migrate maintenance windows.

  1. For each validated Latest Dynatrace alert, disable the corresponding classic metric alert.
  2. Track the ratio of classic vs. Latest Dynatrace metric alerts until the target decommission percentage is reached.
  3. Inventory all active classic maintenance windows: schedules, scopes, and linked alerts.
  4. Recreate each maintenance window in Latest Dynatrace with equivalent scheduling and entity scope.
  5. Validate that maintenance windows suppress the expected Latest Dynatrace alerts during scheduled windows.

Verify: Target percentage of classic metric alerts decommissioned; all maintenance windows recreated and validated in Latest Dynatrace.

Stage complete when:

  • All metric-selector-based alerts have converted equivalents and entity-selector-based alerts have manual DQL equivalents
  • Latest Dynatrace alerts fire in alignment with classic alerts over the parallel validation period
  • Target percentage of classic metric alerts are decommissioned and all maintenance windows are recreated in Latest Dynatrace

This stage runs in parallel with Upgrade classic dashboards; both must be complete before continuing. Once both are done, continue to Upgrade team-based and global alerting.
