External synthetic tests let you ingest results from test runners outside Dynatrace—such as Playwright, Selenium, k6, CI jobs, or third-party synthetic platforms—into your Dynatrace environment. Results are stored in Grail, appear in the Smartscape topology alongside the applications they test, and can drive anomaly detection and alerting.

Overview

With external Synthetic tests, you benefit from:

  • A dedicated ingest endpoint (/platform/ingest/custom/events/external.tests) that accepts JSON events from external runners.
  • Automated processing that extracts availability, duration, failure, and step metrics from ingested events. Credentials in URLs are masked automatically.
  • Anomaly detection for local outages, global outages, performance anomalies, and error-code spikes. Resulting problems use the environment's existing notification profiles.
  • Two ready-made dashboards: Overview and Usage.

Prerequisites

  • An existing test runner or external testing product that produces test results.
  • A mapping from the runner's result format to the external-test event schema.
  • Monaco CLI for deploying the starter pack.
  • Deployment and ingest tokens with the required permissions.

Get started

External synthetic tests are deployed using the dynatrace-external-tests starter pack—a Monaco bundle that provides the ingest endpoint, processing rules, anomaly detection, and dashboards.
