Define host-naming rules based on AWS tags

Amazon Web Services (AWS) enables you to assign metadata and tags to their AWS resources. A tag is a label that consists of a customer-defined key that can make it easier to manage your AWS resources.

To create a host-naming rule based on your AWS name tag:

  1. Go to Settings > Monitoring > Host naming.

  2. Select Add a new rule.

  3. Enter a Rule name.

  4. Define the Host name format, including any static text string that describes the AWS tag. AWS placeholders are available to make it easy to dynamically include specific host properties in your automated host naming scheme:

    {AwsAutoScalingGroup:Name}
    {AwsAvailabilityZone:Name}
    {Host:AWSNameTag}

  5. Select additional filtering properties if required.

  6. Under Conditions, create a condition based on the AWS name tag:

    • Select AWS name tag from the list.
    • Select a condition from the list and type the value to be evaluated by the rule.

    Add one or more conditions to the rule so the rule applies your new naming scheme to only those hosts that you want to rename. Optional conditions can check for the existence of many different types of host attributes, including architecture, OS type, bitness, and cloud-specific details and tags.

  7. Select Preview to verify that the list of returned entities matching your new rule includes only those entities that you want to be renamed.

Host naming rules don’t require you to restart your hosts or processes and they don’t affect how hosts are identified and grouped. These rules provide a fast and easy way to apply intuitive naming conventions to your hosts.
